Environmental Toxicology
Zinn consults on the effects of environmental exposure to hazardous materials on human health and the health of other organisms in the environment. He received his doctorate in 1982 form the Oklahoma State University Department of Physiological Sciences where his research interest was in the effects of heavy metals and complex organic chemicals on epithelial tissues in several animal models. In subsequent years he developed a practical expertise in the toxicity of petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated industrial chemicals and heavy metals released into the environment. Dr. Zinn has investigated potential and actual exposure of human and environmental receptors to these materials during exploration, production, transportation, refining, and distribution of crude oil and petroleum products as well as industrial processes. Dr. Zinn is a Certified Industrial Environmental Toxicologist

Litigation Support
Dr. Zinn has supported attorneys associated with cases involving dioxin releases at incinerator sites, environmental releases of crude oil and refined petroleum products where human exposure was being evaluated. He has provided support in the form of field investigation, courtroom testimony, State agency hearings, and US EPA settlement proceedings.

Environmental Forensics
Environmental Forensics uses classical analytical chemistry tools with forensic techniques in interpretation to identify the source of environmental contaminants as well as the approximate amount of time that contaminants were released. This technique has proven valuable to the Petroleum Industry, government regulators, and commercial distributors as a tool to establish responsible parties when multiple contaminant sources exist. Zinn has conducted forensic analyses for major oil companies, state regulatory agencies, and commercial entities since 2000.

Risk Assessment
A Risk Assessment provides a quantitative representation of the risk posed to human health or environmental receptors presented as the potential increase of non-cancer and carcinogenic affects on an exposed population. Zinn follows the primary protocols and models from the US EPA Risk Assessment Guidance for Superfund and other agencies to conduct Risk Assessments. Zinn has performed Risk Assessments since 1997.

Environmental Site Assessments
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) established standards for Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) sufficient to establish an innocent land owner position for purchasers of real property which may have existing adverse environmental conditions at the time of purchase. Zinn performs Phase I ESA's (ASTM E1527) and Phase II ESA's (ASTM 1903). Phase I Assessments review existing environmental information about a property, Phase II Assessments collect new data from soil and water samples analyzed in the laboratory. This product is not only used in the transfer of real property, adequately conducted Phase I and Phase II ESA's are a required first step for Brownfield Site Characterizations and State Voluntary Cleanup Programs. Zinn has performed Environmental Site Assessment (previously Audits) since the late 1980's for heavy to light industry, commercial facilities, oil & gas properties, and agricultural tracts.

Brownfield Site Characterization
Industrial or commercial properties with low to moderate levels of environmental contamination may be evaluated for future use and redevelopment using the Brownfield Site Characterization. Initiated by the limited findings of Phase I and Phase II ESA's the Brownfield procedure requires the collection of sufficient new data to complete a Risk Assessment and Remediation Plan for the property. Since 2000 Zinn & Associates has completed Brownfield Projects at a 1920's era Steel Plant and a 1930's vintage Ferrous and Non-ferrous Metal Foundry. Several potential Brownfield sites were completed as Voluntary Cleanup Projects during that same time frame.
